I am a big believer in the notion of always being prepared, and having a small child means that I need to prepare for a lot of things. I bought these cups to keep in my backpack and my car, mainly for when my daughter needs an "emergency drink" or something.The cups are very sturdy. Closed, they are about the size of a hockey puck and are very rigid. The plastics used are very thick. They do not deflect at all under pressure and I can easily see them surviving multiple impacts on hard surfaces. The opening mechanism is a simple internal slot-and-tab arrangement. Basically, you spin the two halves of the cup until the tabs line up with the slots and the two halves come apart. The actual cup part is thick rubber and expands by twisting and lifting the cup from the base. Again, they seem very durable, easily surviving a fairly strong attempt at purposely pulling apart the cup from the base.
